Cisco could take the opportunity of VMWorld to introduce its rumored virtual Switch for VMware ESX Server (specifically on September 16, during Ed Bugnion Keynote) . What’s a virtual switch ? The functional equivalent to an Ethernet switch that a virtual server is to a physical server. It is in fact a pure software implementation of the functions of a real Ethernet switch.
In this case, it is suspected that Cisco has built a virtual implementation of an Ethernet Switch on top of its new x86 OS, NX OS, the operating system that controls its new generation of Ethernet switches (the NX5000 and NX 7000). This would enable the company to provide the same functions and management tools in the virtual space and in the physical space. I’ll be in las Vegas for VMworld from 15 to 18 September to check on this new developement. Stay tuned…
